Stumbled across this recent interview with UX legend Jesse James Garrett on the Tea with Teresa blog:

“What the Heck is User Experience Design??!! (And Why Should I Care?)”
An interview with Jesse James Garrett, President and co-founder of Adaptive Path.

Some describe it as making things easy and enjoyable to use. Others describe it as all the elements that impact someone’s perception of a product or system. Jesse James Garrett says it’s a lot like going on a great first date.

For those who haven’t heard of it before: You’ll be surprise by how much it impacts your life.

For those who know it well: Believe it or not, the complexity made simple. You’ll finally know what to say in the elevator when someone asks you what you do for a living.

The interview is available as an MP3 download or you can listen to the audio stream direct from the blog…

Thanks Teresa – great interview!

This article goes some way to summing up the UX discipline…

Original article: http://mashable.com/2009/01/09/user-experience-design/

Whitney Hess is an independent user experience designer, writer and consultant based in New York City. She authors the blog Pleasure and Pain.

When I tell people that I am a user experience designer, I usually get a blank stare. I try to follow it up quickly by saying that I make stuff easy and pleasurable to use. That’s the repeatable one-liner, but it’s a gross oversimplification and isn’t doing me any favors.

The term “user experience” or UX has been getting a lot of play, but many businesses are confused about what it actually is and how crucial it is to their success.

I asked some of the most influential and widely respected practitioners in UX what they consider to be the biggest misperceptions of what we do. The result is a top 10 list to debunk the myths. Read it, learn it, live it.

Summary

User experience design is NOT…

1.	…user interface design
2.	…a step in the process
3.	…about technology
4.	…just about usability
5.	…just about the user
6.	…expensive
7.	…easy
8.	…the role of one person or department
9.	…a single discipline
10. …a choice

The original article contains detailed breakdowns of the key points summarised above. It’s an interesting read for anyone in the industry.
